About

Jambu is one of the more unusual botanicals we work with. Its value comes from a single, very distinctive property: on contact, it creates a tingling, mildly numbing sensation. That effect comes from spilanthol (also known as affinin), the compound the flower heads are richest in.

In skin care, spilanthol is known for relaxing the fine muscle contractions behind expression lines, which is why Acmella oleracea extract is used in anti-ageing products and marketed as a botox-alternative ingredient. In oral care and food, the same compound gives the tingle and the fresh, buzzing feel on the tongue.
